Estimating and Sales Manager in Millwork (Pre-con Director) Commercial Construction
Job Description
WB Powell, Inc seeks an Estimating and Sales Manager in Millwork for a hybrid-remote, Southern California based role.
Responsibilities
- Assess RFQs and ITBs, interpret requirements, and assign them to estimators based on expertise and client lists.
- Prepare prompt, precise project estimates and quotes using margin guidelines, pricing tools, bidding systems, custom calculations, product functionality, drawings, and related documentation.
- Advise on optimal product applications during both quote and order phases to maximize client satisfaction and profitability.
- Utilize established pricing for standard products and their configurations.
- Develop costing information and pricing recommendations for custom products.
- Create material takeoffs and produce highlighted drawings that clearly depict bid scope.
- Present project requirements to Production, Procurement, and Project Management after contract award, including cost documentation, samples, proprietary/project information, and client contacts.
- Coordinate proposal and estimate development across the estimating team.
- Maintain timely, effective communication with Executive Management.
- Lead sales initiatives and guide the estimating team to meet targets; follow up on project updates and visit client offices.
- Expand the client base and cultivate vendor relationships while maintaining existing partnerships.
- Assess costs to determine appropriate customer pricing.
- Analyze trends to establish annual unit and gross profit targets.
- Improve processes, update training materials, and implement SOPs.
- Maintain sales volumes while monitoring trends, economic indicators, competitors, and supply-demand dynamics.
- Track metrics for estimators and clients, including win/loss, productivity, and gross margins.
- Improve the ERP system and benchmark against industry ERP solutions; adjust bidding software as needed.
- Participate in weekly management, sales forecast, and billing forecast meetings; assist with contract review and markup for sold projects.
- Develop and standardize estimator training materials; maintain the estimator training manual.
- Complete other duties and projects as assigned.
Requirements
- Experience in the Millwork trade as an Estimating Manager or Senior Project Manager with estimating responsibilities.
- Hybrid-Remote: weekly travel to client job sites, client offices, and the Norco shop; must reside in Southern California or relocate there.
- Minimum 10 years of continuous and cumulative experience, preferably with custom, high-end commercial woodworking firms in estimating management, manufacturing, project management, or field installation roles.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word; Bluebeam PDF; and experience with Innergy and/or Crow’s Nest and other on-screen tools such as BidMail, Procore, Building Connected, and Isft.
- Strong written and verbal communication and analytical skills.
- Excellent interpersonal abilities with the capacity to read client needs and collaborate effectively.
- Commitment to safe work practices and adherence to safety requirements.
- Regular travel to client sites and offices on a weekly basis.

The position is primarily remote; weekly travel to customer job sites, customer offices, and the Norco, CA shop is required. Applicants must reside in Southern California or relocate there.
Work Environment
Typically an office or remote setting with weekly on-site client visits and sales meetings.
Physical Demands
- Sit for an eight-hour shift with periodic movement.
- Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
- Full use of arms to reach, lift, and maneuver wood products, tools, and equipment.
- Visual, hearing, and communication abilities sufficient to perform tasks and maintain safety.
Competencies
- At least 10 years of experience in Estimating Management or related roles within custom, high-end architectural woodworking.
- Advanced proficiency with Excel, Bluebeam PDF, OST, Innergy, and/or Crow’s Nest for material quantification and scope definition.
- Deep understanding of the custom architectural woodworking industry, including fixtures, wall and ceiling treatments, casework, and integration with other materials for turnkey delivery.
- Professional demeanor, composure under pressure, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to read customers and identify needs.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and analytical capabilities.

- Commitment to safety and safe work practices.
- Proficiency with PC-based office tools including Word, Excel, and Bluebeam PDF; travel weekly to client sites/offices.
Salary
From $130,000 per year; compensation depends on experience.
