Estimating and Sales Manager in Millwork (Pre-con Director) Commercial Construction

Job Description

WB Powell, Inc seeks an Estimating and Sales Manager in Millwork to oversee the estimating and client acquisition efforts for millwork construction within commercial projects. This role blends technical leadership in cost estimation with strategic sales to win contracts and support profitable project delivery. The position is based in Riverside County with a hybrid work arrangement.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, review, and interpret RFQs and ITBs, then assign work to estimators based on skill and client lists.
  • Generate timely, accurate project estimates and quotes using margin guidelines, pricing tools, methodology, quoting systems, and supporting drawings and documents.
  • Recommend optimal applications of all company products during quote and order phases to maximize customer satisfaction and profitability.
  • Utilize prepared pricing for established products and their various configurations; develop costing and pricing for custom products.
  • Prepare material takeoffs and clearly highlighted drawings that depict the bid scope.
  • Present project requirements to Production, Procurement, and Project Management after contract award, including cost documentation, samples, and relevant project information.
  • Coordinate the development of proposals and estimates with the estimating team.
  • Maintain effective and timely communication with Executive Management.
  • Drive sales and guide the estimating team toward sales targets; follow up on project updates and conduct client office visits.
  • Develop new clients and vendor relationships while maintaining existing vendor and client relationships.
  • Evaluate costs and establish product pricing for customer sales.
  • Analyze trends to support annual unit and gross profit planning; continuously improve processes and SOPs.
  • Maintain sales volumes, monitor market trends, economic indicators, competitors, and supply and demand factors.
  • Track metrics for estimators and clients, including win/loss, productivity, and gross margins.
  • Pursue ERP system improvements and provide guidance on industry standards; adjust bidding software as needed.
  • Attend weekly management, sales forecast, and billing forecast meetings; assist in contract review and markup for projects sold.
  • Develop, implement, and standardize estimator training materials; perform additional duties or projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Experience in the Millwork trade as an Estimating Manager is required.
  • Minimum ten years of continuous and cumulative experience, preferably with custom, high-end commercial woodworking firms in estimating management, manufacturing, project management, and/or field installation.
  • Preferred formal education beyond high school, such as a 2-year degree or trade school, with emphasis in architectural design, estimating, or wood-related manufacturing.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Bluebeam PDF, OST, Innergy, and/or Crow’s Nest for quantifying material and defining scope.
  • Weekly travel to customer job sites and offices is required.

Competencies

  • Extensive experience in the custom, high-end architectural woodworking sector, including fixtures, casework, fittings, and integration with materials like stone, metal, upholstery, resin, acrylics, glass, and finishes.
  • Strong ability to manage multiple projects under pressure with a professional demeanor and collaborative mindset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the capacity to engage all organizational levels.
  • Robust interpersonal skills, enabling effective reading of customer needs and relationship management.
  • Commitment to safety and safe work practices; proficient with common PC software including Word, Excel, and Bluebeam PDF.
  • Willingness to travel weekly to client sites and offices.

Compensation

From $125,000 per year

Work Environment

The role primarily operates in an office or remote setting, with weekly on-site client meetings as part of the sales activities.
